Simple steps for ensuring a safe working environment

Slips and trips easily remain the top offender when it comes to workplace injuries. In fact, according to HSE, a third of all accidents are a result of slips, trips, or falls in the workplace.

Workplace hazards can come from a huge host of places, the biggest culprits being uneven, wet, and contaminated floor surfaces, unsuitable footwear, poor lighting, or walkway obstructions and can result in serious injuries and even death.

By law, companies are required to “ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone who may be affected by their work, so far as is reasonably practicable.” This includes taking steps to control slip and trip risks. Additionally, employers are required to ensure that floors are in suitable, good condition and free from obstructions and to undertake regular risk assessments

Companies across the UK end up spending millions in compensation and lost productivity every year on workplace injuries.

Here are some simple tips for keeping your workplace hazard-free.

Keep up with your housekeeping

Good housekeeping is one of the most (if not the most) important and effective ways to prevent slips and trips.  This means ensuring that all walkways, aisles, and work areas are free of clutter, debris, and spills.

Housekeeping is fundamental in preventing accidents, without which, all other preventive measures such as training, specialty flooring or footwear cannot be fully effective.

By creating regularly scheduled cleaning and maintenance, you can easily prevent some of the more obvious slips and trips risks. Use this time to check and repair all equipment and fixtures regularly to ensure that they are in good working order. Fix or replace any damaged flooring, stairs, or walkways, and ensure that handrails and guardrails are secure and in good condition.

Your To-Do List:

  • Clean up spills immediately and make sure you mark spills and wet areas.
  • Keep floors tidy and clear of debris.
  • Remove obstacles and clutter from walkways.
  • Make it a rule to always close cabinets or storage drawers.
  • Use a cable tidy to cover any cables that cross walkways.

Anti Slip Step Over Platforms – Starting from £412.55

Custom-made GRP grating step access platforms are a versatile solution for various industrial applications. These platforms are specifically designed for roof walkways, chemical bund access, doorway access, stairways, inspection platforms, assembly lines, and more.

With our GRP step over platforms, you can ensure safe access and clearly marked walking routes over pipe work, cable trays, ducting, industrial machinery, gutters, and walls.

Apply the right flooring & footwear for the job

Installing the right flooring in your workplace is also essential for maintaining a safe and healthy environment for employees. Companies need to ensure they have the right flooring in place, taking a variety of factors into account depending on the environment and industry, such as slip and impact resistance, ergonomic properties, and fire safety.

Choosing a non-slip or slip-resistant surface is particularly important in areas prone to moisture or spills, particularly in cases of food manufacturing or chemical manufacturing. In these environments, employers have a responsibility to mitigate the risk of slips and trips.

When considering your flooring, opt for fire-resistant materials, as well as the durability of the flooring material and its ability to withstand heavy use, impact, and regular cleaning. Evaluate the maintenance requirements and ensure they align with your available resources.

It is also important to consider the proper footwear that employees should wear to further mitigate the risk of slips and trips. Shoes should fit properly, have slip-resistant soles, and provide good support. Encourage employees to wear appropriate footwear and consider providing slip-resistant footwear to those who work in areas with high risk of slipping hazards.

Your To-Do List:

  • Assess the specific needs of each area in your workplace and consult local fire codes and regulations for specific requirements.
  • Look for flooring options with high slip resistance, especially in areas where spills, moisture, or oils are common.
  • Check for appropriate slip resistance ratings provided by manufacturers.
  • Or engage with a flooring specialist or professional who can provide expert guidance tailored to your workplace needs.

What’s more, they come in a variety of standard colours or can be customised to your own colours.

Improve Visibility

Sufficient lighting ensures proper visibility for employees and customers to clearly see potential hazards like wet or slippery surfaces, obstacles, loose objects, uneven steps, or changes in surface levels. Installing lighting fixtures that provide even illumination along walkways, staircases, and corridors can help to eliminate any shadows, dark spots, or blind spots that could lead to a potential slip and trip hazards.

Emergency lighting is a key addition for all workspaces. In the case of power outages or emergency situations, adequate lighting is essential for a safe and swift evacuation. Take care to ensure good visibility of exit routes, emergency exits, signage, and obstacles.

Signage and floor markings are another way to ensure good visibility. Warning signs and floor markings are a simple, yet effective way to alert employees to potential hazards. Use warning signs to indicate wet floors, uneven surfaces, or other hazards that could cause slips and trips. Warning signs should be made using high-contrast colours and reflective materials to enhance visibility, especially in dimly lit areas, easy to understand, and placed in areas where they can be seen by all employees.

Additionally, in accordance with The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and the Equality Act 2010, it is recommended that all commercial or public stairways accessed by the public should feature contrasting colour nosing on all step edges, especially for the benefit of visually impaired individuals. These stair nosings should also have a slip-resistant surface, particularly in wet conditions, to ensure enhanced safety.

Your To-Do List:

  • Ensure that the workplace has sufficient lighting in all areas, including hallways, stairways, entrances, walkways, and workstations.
  • Regularly check and replace burnt-out light bulbs and faulty switches and ensure that all lights are functioning properly.
  • Ensure you have adequate signage in place for any potential slip risks, and mark spills and wet areas right away.

Our Sustainability Promise

Sustainability is a key value for us and with a strong roadmap in place, we are working toward becoming the most sustainable GRP manufacturer in the UK and are on track to hit our goal of net zero (for our own operations) by 2030.

One of the ways we're making a difference is through our super-strength resin which is made from recycled plastic bottles. For every 220kg drum of resin we use, over 1,800 plastic bottles are saved from going to the landfill or ending up in our oceans. And we're always on the lookout for additional ways to shrink our carbon footprint and expand our sustainability efforts to cover even more of our product range.

We take pride in being one of the few UK manufacturers in our industry, actively reducing our carbon footprint by avoiding imports and supporting our local economy.
